My Next Step After This Quarter

Learning English in the UCR Extension and living in the southern Califonia, I have a lot of opportunities to practice English and experience the American culture. I love this university and enjoy the campus. I love the weather in the southern Califonia. My wife will come here this Thursday. We have planned several trips in the break between the quarters.

Between the quarters, my wife and I will attend several trips. First, we would like to have a trip to San Francisco with my friends, who will come here from Taiwan next week. Next, we planned to have a trip to Las Vegas by bus for previewng then to drive by car for details. Futhermore, we will go to Disneyland and Sea World, Hollywood Ave. by car.

After this quarter, I plan to take the IOF for next quarter. For most of  the Asian students, the speaking and listening abilities are weaker than the other students. I would like to utilize the last quarter for me to enhance my speaking and listening abilities. I hope that I will have more leisure time next quarter, so that I will be able to spend the time to take care of my wife and travel with her.

At the beginning, I planed to stay here for three quarters. Now I have changed my plan to two quarters, because I have to help my wife teach my kid, who will be at the third year in the elemantary school. The courses will be too hard for my wife to teach. I have to go back to my country after the summer.

All friends, you can contact with me by this blog or e-mail if necessary. Maybe you would like to visit my city for a short term. Maybe you have any question about Taiwan, mechanical engineering. Feel free to contact with me.

More about me

My name is Liao, Chih-Yuan, I was born in Kaohsiung City, on January 21st, 1971. My first English teacher gave me English first name-Paul. I spent my childhood and school years until I was 15 years old. Then I spent the next 3 years for my senior high school education in Tainan City. After, I entered the National Taiwan University and got mechanical engineering bachelor and master degrees. I have just one younger brother. My family is part of who I am today. Especially my parents always encourage me to learn as much as I can. I have always been a high achiever. My favorite subject at school was math which aroused my interests to calculation and analysis.

After I got the master degree, I had to spend two years in the military. At the beginning of my career, all that I thought about is to earn more and more money. After I met my wife and had two kids, the education of the kids is the most importat for me and my wife.

It's been said,"Wisdom is not knowledge, nor experience, nor dialectical excellence, but a selfless attitude. " Therefore, try my best, then let it be.. It costed me a lot of time to understand and realize the true value of my life.

In my school years, I had learned how to get along with others. As an adult, I have learned to respect myself as well. I truly enjoy spending my leisure time with my family as well as surfing on the surfaing on the internet, and listening music. I believe that we should live life to its fullest capacity and cherish all that it gives us.

The Introduction of Tainan

Tainan is a city in the southern Taiwan. Tainan is one of the oldest cities in Taiwan. As a result, there are more Buddist and Taoist temples in Tainan than any other city in Taiwan. Many well known Taiwanese cuisines originated from Tainan, including oyster omelet, danzimian and many more. Besides, it is the fifth largest after New Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Taipei.

First, Tainan is one of the oldest cities in Taiwan. Tainan claims its name as one of the Taiwanese cultural capitals for its abundant historic monument and citizen lifestyle. For example, wedding ceremony in Tainan is a series of complex process where perfection will be asked to every detail. Both of man and woman need to prepare 12 specific gifts representing different meanings during engagement ceremony and more to come in the wedding. People believe this complexity is a sign of being civilized.

 12 specific gifts

Second, there are many well known Taiwanese cuisines in Tainan, including oyster omelet, danzimian and many more. Houndreds years ago, only the rich could eat sweet food, so the sweet symbolize the rich and the noble. Generally speaking, people eat sweeter in the southern Taiwan than in the northern Taiwan. Besides, Tainan was a center for sugar production industry.

 Danzimian (Dry pork mince noodle)

As Tainan is the one of Metropolitan areas in Taiwan, it has lots of department stores, shopping malls.Several world's luxury brands have branches in Tainan. To enjoy the lifestyle of Taiwanese, Flower Night Market is good place to visit.

Interesting Places to Visit in Taipei

I was born in Kaohsiung, but I lived in Taipei for the most of the time after I began to study in the university. I spent 4 years for the bachelor degree and 2 years for the master degree in Taipei. The capital of Taiwan is Taipei where I started my career and continued to work for more than ten years.

 Taipei 101

First of all, no one could introduce Taipei without a mention about Taipei 101, which is the 101-floor landmark, and the tallest building in Taipei. You could see it almost everywhere in Taipei. You could go the observatory to view almost the whole of Taipei City. By the way, there is a large mall in Taipei 101. There is wonderful fire work as shown in the above picture every New Year Midnight.

National Palace Museum
Jadeite Cabbage with Insects

Secondly, there are a lot of collection in the National Palace Museum, such as painting, calligraphy, rare books, ceramics, bronzes, jades, curios, etc. I have to introduce that the Jadeite Cabbage with Insects is one of the greatest collections. I almost can not believe that the colors of the body, leaves and even the insects are natural. The artisan carved the piece of jade and designed the suitable shape with its original color distribution.

 Ximending

At last, Ximending has been a attractive district of shopping and entertainment for more than 60 years. There are various therters, modern karaoke houses, electronic stores, fashional clothing and shoe shores, and the restaurents that provide the different foods from different countries or areas. By the way, it is popular with teenagers and young people, so there are a lot of beautiful girls and handsome boys, especially in the evening and night.

Interesting Places to Visit in Kaohsiung

Koahsiung City is located in the southern part of Taiwan. I was born there. I would like to introduce some interesting places to visit in Kaohsiung.

 Tuntex Sky Tower

First of all, Tuntex Sky Tower is the tallest building in Kaohsiung. The building is mainly offices, but including residential places, a department store. The 75th floor is an observation deck where avaiable is the best view in Kaohsiung. According to a friend of mine from Hongkong, the rent for the apartment is very cheap.

Love River Night

Secondly, the Love River is flowing through Kaohsiung, and it is about 12 Km long. The river was very black, dirty and stinky about 25 years ago. After huge efforts of eliminating pollution and smells, it has become a beautiful one with coffee shops. Couples may walk along the riverbanks and enjoy a romantic travel.

Liouhe Night Market

Thirdly, Liouhe Night Market is the most famous one for the tourists. We can find different foods from different areas or countries, such as Hongkong, Japan, etc. By the way, the price is much cheaper than that in Taipei Night Market. However, it is too crowded now for the residents now because of too many tourists.
